Born Beatrice Gladys Lillie in Toronto she made her début on the London musical stage in 1914. During the First World War she performed in various revues produced by André Charlot, displaying enormous comic talent. In 1924 Lillie made her first Broadway appearance in one of Charlot's shows, establishing her as an international star. She performed regularly in revues between 1914 and 1939.
