Sultan Barghash fought his elder brother Majid, the rightful heir, for the throne after their father's death. The family feuding brought about shifts in loyalty from other family members. As a result, he spent two years in exile in Bombay but eventually returned to Zanzibar upon his brother's death to become Sultan of Zanzibar. He was responsible for modernising Stone Town and is credited with improving the infrastructure and amenities, building new roads, public baths, parks, government buildings and hospitals.
