A social reformer, economist, civil servant and later Liberal MP, Beveridge is best known as the mastermind behind the Welfare State legislation of 1944-8. The 'Beveridge Plan', formulated in 1942, aimed to tackle problems of want, disease, ignorance, squalor and idleness, proposing a free national health service, child allowances and full employment.
