Weedon Grossmith was known simply as Weedon or 'Wee-Gee'. After an unsuccessful attempt to become a portrait artist, Grossmith turned instead to the stage. His acting career took off when he played opposite Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre in 1888, in Charles Selby's Robert Macaire. He made his name as a comedy character actor.
