Bombay-born Carnac joined the East India Company in 1801 as a Cadet in the Madras Native Infantry. In 1802 he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Governor of Bombay and spent the next seventeen years working for the British administration in India. In 1822 he retired from the Indian service and went to England.
