© National Portrait Gallery, London
attributed to Silvester (Sylvester) Harding, after Nicholas Hilliard
Courtier and politician, Hatton is said to have attracted the attention of Queen Elizabeth I at a masque. He enjoyed a meteoric rise to power, eventually becoming Lord Chancellor in 1587. He was made a Knight of the Garter and Chancellor of the University of Oxford the following year. Displaced to some extent in the queen's affections by Sir Walter Ralegh, Hatton nevertheless developed a lasting friendship with Elizabeth, who visited him on his deathbed.
