Nicolo Paganini NPG D8965
© National Portrait Gallery, London
after a bronze by Jean Pierre Dantan
Paganini established himself as Italy's greatest violinist in solo performances between 1810 and 1828. He embarked on a tour of Europe in 1829, reaching London in 1834 where he played to rapturous crowds. Plagued by ill-health, which he treated with mercury and opium, Paganini's gaunt appearance appealed to the romantic sensibilities of his audiences. He was known for his virtuoso playing but also composed music, mostly for his own use.
