This carte-de-visite was presented to George Scharf, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, by the Duchess of Marlborough in the 1860s and entered his albums of 'distinguished persons'. Scharf was friendly with the Duke's third son Lord Randolph Churchill, father of Winston Churchill and future statesman, to whom he would send birthday presents at Eton.
