Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 2000 until 2005, Woolf first came to public attention with his critical report following the Strangeways prison riot in 1990. He has since championed penal reform and addressing the problem of overcrowding in prisons. He was head of the committee to radically shake-up the civil justice system, designed to simplify and reduce the cost of legal proceedings.
