A great-nephew of the historian Lord Macaulay, in his time Trevelyan was the most widely read and admired of living British historians, a master of narrative and descriptive style. His reputation rests largely on a trilogy on Garibaldi (1907-11), England Under Queen Anne (1930-4) and English Social History (1944).
