Dawson was editor of The Times from 1912 to 1919 and again in 1923-41. Prior to this, he worked in the Colonial Service under Lord Milner in South Africa where he was one of Milner's 'Kindergarten', a brotherhood of young men committed to South African unification and imperial rule. He remained in Johannesburg as editor of the Star (1905-10). He returned to England in 1911 where, as editor of The Times during two World Wars, he was pivotal in British politics.
