After completing her training as a nurse, Crowdy joined the VADs in 1911. In 1914 she went with the first VAD to be sent abroad which was led by her friend, Katharine Furse. When Furse was recalled to London, Crowdy was appointed in charge of all VADs on the continent. Working primarily as a military administrator, she oversaw the formation of ambulance stations, hospitals and places for nurses and relatives of the wounded to stay.
