While studying languages at Oxford in 1897, Courtney met the suffragist Maude Royden and thereafter began a life dedicated to campaigning for women's rights. Her focus on pacifism following the outbreak of World War I caused conflicts with the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and she resigned as secretary when the NUWSS founder Millicent Fawcett became focused on the war effort.
