General. Robertson was decorated in the First World War, and between the two world wars was Managing Director of Dunlop, South Africa. He re-joined the army in 1940 and proved to be a brilliant military administrator. Living in Germany between 1945 and 1950, he rose from Deputy Military Governor to become the UK commissioner in the Allied High Commission (1949-50). With American colleagues he was responsible for organising the airlift to counter the Soviet Union's attempted blockade of Berlin.
