Soldier; commanded 1st Airborne Division (1941); influential in planning Operation 'Market Garden', the airborne landings, Holland (1944); famously commented to Montgomery that Arnhem might be 'a bridge too far'; chief of staff to Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia (1944-6); comptroller of the household of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh (1946-52); married (1932) the novelist Daphne du Maurier. Competed in the five man bobleigh at the 1928 St. Moritz Winter Olympics.
