Archibald Forbes served in the Royal Dragoons from 1859 until being invalided out of the army in 1864, after which he became a journalist. In 1870 Forbes was sent as a war correspondent to report on the Franco-Prussian war. This was his big break; the war established his reputation as a leading war correspondent and launched his career as the Daily News leading special correspondent, which continued until he retired.
