After studying Engineering at Cambridge University (1942-5), Caro trained in sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools (1947-52) and as an assistant to Henry Moore (1951-3). As a teacher at St Martin's School of Art (1952-79) he made a significant contribution to sculpture, encouraging a new enquiring approach. Following his solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, Caro's work, often using steel, became publically recognised. He was knighted in 1987.
