Actor, born in Cliftonville, Margate. Made his screen debut in 1944 in The Way Ahead but achieved stardom opposite Celia Johnson in the David Lean directed film Brief Encounter (1945). Other films include Green for Danger (1946), the Carol Reed directed The Third Man (1949) and The Heart of the Matter (1953).
