Born in Yorkshire, and brought up in Farnham, Surrey, Hawthorn was the son of a racing motor cyclist . His first chance at racing success came in 1952 when a family friend invited him to race their Cooper-Bristol. He became an overnight sensation with three wins at Goodwood that year.
