Born in Suffolk, Hambling studied with Lett Haines and Cedric Morris at Hadleigh before graduating from the Slade School of Art in 1969. She began painting portraits in 1973. She was the first artist in residence at the National Gallery, London (1980-81), and her 'Max Wall' series was showcased at the National Portrait Gallery in 1983.
