A general, dramatist and Whig politician, Burgoyne was known as 'Gentleman Johnny'. In 1743 he eloped with Lady Charlotte Stanley, the daughter of the 11th Earl of Derby, and to escape creditors lived in France between 1749-55. After distinguished service in Portugal and Spain, he failed in his plan for an offensive from Canada against the American colonists and surrendered at Saratoga in 1777.
