Pannett's portrayal of Morrison as the distinguished statesman glosses over the bittersweet end of his remarkable career. In 1955, he felt betrayed when the Labour party leadership passed to Hugh Gaitskill. He retired in 1959 and accepted a life peerage. Entering the House of Lords as Baron Morrison of Lambeth, he fought to stop the abolition of the London County Council, dying in 1969.
