Contributor to the New Statesman between the Wars, and regarded as the most influential socialist thinker of the period; elected Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford in 1944; Chairman, and later President of the Fabian Society, founder of the New Fabian Research Bureau in 1931.
