Pope was originally an artist's model, often posing for her husband Francis Wheatley. During his decline in health and after his death, she began to teach drawing to support her family. She was encouraged by Sir John Soane through a commission and access to students including Princess Sophia of Gloucester. Pope began painting miniatures and Dutch style paintings of flowers before becoming a botanical illustrator.
