Epstein often sought out sitters whose features he found interesting. He was keen to depict what he described as Russell's 'fawn-like head' and was delighted when Russell's wife introduced them. Kar's photograph reveals Epstein's distinctive method of balancing the bust on two wooden supports, under the neck and chin, which are bolstered from below by a mound of clay.
