Gilmore grew up in London and attended finishing school in Switzerland. She studied sculpture at the Westminster School of Art, where she met her future husband, the teacher Mervyn Peake. The couple lived on Sark in the Channel Islands where Maeve devoted much of her time to her husband and their three children. Nevertheless she continued to paint; an inventory of her work records over 200 paintings. Her work ranges from portraits to surrealist experiments, and remains largely in the Peake family collection.
