Reverend Smith travelled to South Africa in 1870 to work as a missionary. He served as an assistant army chaplain during the Anglo-Zulu war and was present at the defence of Rorke's Drift on 22 January 1879. He was a non-combatant but received praise for his bravery in distributing ammunition among the soldiers. His role in the action was widely celebrated. Promoted to full army chaplain, he served in later imperial conflicts in Egypt and the Sudan.
