Baroness Elizabeth Butler-Sloss was the first woman to enter the highest ranks of the judiciary with her appointment as Lord Justice of Appeal in 1988. She chaired the Cleveland child abuse enquiry that resulted in the Children Act (1989) and in 2002 ruled in the landmark 'Right to Die' euthanasia case. She was President of the High Court Family Division from 1999 to 2005. In 2006, she was created a life peer and sits in the House of Lords as a crossbencher.
