A brilliant student at the Slade School of Art (1894-98). He had also studied together with his sister \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/person\/mp02438\"\u003eGwen John\u003c\/a\u003e in Paris. He was associated with the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/group\/1122\"\u003eNew English Art Club\u003c\/a\u003e and the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/group\/1131\"\u003eCamden Town Group\u003c\/a\u003e but remained largely independent from artistic trends and movements. By the 1920s he was the leading portraitist of his day whose sitters included distinguished contemporaries such as \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/person\/mp04075\"\u003eGeorge Bernard Shaw\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/person\/mp02655\"\u003eT.E.
