Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner joined the Navy at the age of thirteen, and was promoted to captain eleven years later. He commanded a number of frigates and warships and served in the American War of Independence (1775-83). In 1786, he suppressed smuggling in the Gulf of Mexico and ordered detailed hydrographic surveys of Caribbean locations of interest to the Navy.
