Author, publisher and Governor-General of Canada (1935-40). Buchan published his first novel, Sir Quixote of the Moors (1895), while still at university. He worked in South Africa from 1901 to 1903, assisting with reconstruction after the South African War. After returning to England, he worked as a publisher with Nelsons and assisted with propaganda during the First World War. Buchan's most famous novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps, was published in 1915. In 1935 he was made Governor-General of Canada and proved an energetic and popular leader.... more
