Painter. Born in London, Burra studied at Chelsea School of Art (1921-3) and the Royal College of Art (1923-4). He worked in large scale watercolours, as his chronic arthritis made working in oils too painful. Burra was among the first to respond to emergent African-American urban culture and a journey to New York produced a series of wry paintings of Harlem. He also travelled widely in Europe and Mexico.
