by Norman McBeath

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Paterson is known as a poet, musician and editor. His first collection, Nil Nil, won the 1993 Forward Poetry Prize and Landing Light (2003), won both the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Whitbread Poetry Award. Paterson's work often centres on philosophical and metaphysical themes, treated with playfulness and humour. The musicality and rhythm of his poetry is attributed to his background as a professional musician with the jazz-folk ensemble Lammas. In 2008, he was awarded an OBE.
