The author of The Co-operative Movement in Britain (1891) and Factory Acts (1901), Beatrice Webb was, with her husband Sidney, a driving force in socialist intellectual circles at the turn of the century and, like Shaw, a prominent member of the Fabian Society. Among their joint publications are English Local Government (9 volumes, 1906-29) and Soviet Communism: A new Civilization? (1935).
