He began his career as an apprentice reporter at the Kent Messenger in 1927 but a heart problem soon forced his resignation. The following year he was employed by the publishing firm Hutchinson. In 1933 he was appointed Manager of its associated company Selwyn & Blount. He left the firm two years later to join Michael Joseph Ltd at its foundation and rose to become Deputy Chairman by 1956.
