Barrister, playwright and author; his plays have been staged since the 1950s, but reached a peak with the semi-autobiographical A Voyage Round My Father (1970). In 1966 he became a QC; his experiences at the bar proved to be the basis of much of his subsequent writing including the best-known of his many television adaptations, the Rumpole of the Bailey series (first broadcast 1978). Other televised novels include Paradise Postponed (1985) and Summer's Lease (1988).
