Geographer; he served in the East Indies from 1760, joined the East India Company in 1763 and was surveyor-general in Bengal from 1764 to 1777. After his return to London he published the Bengal Atlas (1779) and a Map of India (1781). His later works concerned the geography of Africa, the Middle East and the Atlantic.
