'No one,' said Lord Willoughby de Broke, 'was half such a country gentleman as Henry Chaplin looked.' Although energetic in the landed interest as a conservative MP from 1868 to 1916, Chaplin's primary enthusiasm was for horse racing and fox hunting. He won a celebrated Derby victory with Hermit in 1867 but, in later years, his fortune was impaired by his lavish hospitality and the upkeep of stables and kennels.
