Maunder won a scholarship to Girton College, Cambridge in 1886 but as a female student was not permitted to receive her B.A. degree. In 1891 she began underpaid work as a 'lady computer' at the Greenwich Royal Observatory, creating data from photographs of the sun. Here she met her husband and lifelong collaborator E.
