The son of an upholsterer, William Bewick was trained under the painter Benjamin Haydon while attending the Royal Academy Schools. He began exhibiting his work in 1820, at the Society of Painters in Water Colours. In the 1820s Bewick spent four years studying in Rome; on his return he established himself as a portrait and history painter.
