Young presented his first paper at the Royal Society at the age of nineteen. He published a series of papers detailing his research into optics and the propagation of sound, and in 1801 was made Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution. In two years, he delivered over a hundred lectures on subjects including mechanics, hydrodynamics, astronomy and physics.
