Author and traveller; after a seafaring career he established a newspaper at Calcutta which was eventually suppressed for its criticism of the government, but Buckingham was later granted compensation by the East India Company; he established several other newspapers and journals and from 1832-7 was an MP, but much of his life was spent travelling and lecturing and writing about his journeys.
