Holst was the only child of the composer Gustav Holst. An outstanding pupil at the Royal College of Music, she won several composition prizes. During World War II, Holst organised musical activities for refugees and civilians in rural areas, and went on to found the music school, Dartington College. She became music assistant to Benjamin Britten in 1952, later becoming artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival, Suffolk.
