In keeping with the German Romantic tradition, the royal couple asked the miniaturist, Robert Thorburn, to portray them using earlier art historical styles in a variety of period dress. In this work, an engraved copy, the queen, posed as a medieval lady, wears a dress possibly inspired by Louisa, Lady Waterford's costume at the Eglinton Tournament. Thorburn would also depict her as Raphael-like Madonna. Alluding to Prince Albert's chivalrous qualities, the artist painted him as a noble knight in armour, and a seventeenth-century courtier.
