William Pitt and Charles James Fox, probably the most frequent targets of Gillray's prints, presented the perfect visual joke. The two most famous and influential politicians of the period were not only political opponents but also extreme physical opposites. Gillray exaggerated and inflated these differences. Pitt became taller and skinnier, his profile dominated by an ever-sharper nose, while Fox became squatter, more hirsute and increasingly gross.
