The events of the Crimean War were reported home with unprecedented speed and vividness. Russell's letters to the Times, especially his outraged accounts of the sufferings of the troops in the winter of 1854-5, alerted the public to the true condition of the army and largely inspired the efforts of Florence Nightingale and others.
