After the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815 Wyse spent almost a decade travelling in Europe and the Middle East. He returned to Ireland to join the campaign for Roman Catholic emancipation. In 1830 Wyse was elected to parliament as a Liberal MP, where he advocated the cause of progressive education. He published his ideas on this subject in Education Reform, or, The Necessity of a National System of Education (1836), which was his most widely read and influential work.
