Barnes entered the army as an Ensign in the 47th Regiment in 1792. Promoted repeatedly, by 1813 he had become a Major General. He served on Wellington's staff in the Peninsular War from 1812, commanding a brigade in various battles. He also fought, and was severely wounded, at Waterloo in 1815.
