Hodgkin received a scholarship to Cambridge University where he studied the application of energy to nerve fibres. In 1939 he collaborated with Andrew Huxley to develop this research, but this was suspended at the outbreak of war, when he volunteered for the RAF. His war work included developing short-wave airborne radar to improve aircraft interception. His study with Huxley was published in 1952, and they were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1963.
