Sibyl (Sybil) Grey, Leonora Braham and Jessie Bond as the Three Little Maids in 'The Mikado' NPG x9389

by Herbert Rose Barraud, published by Carson & Comerford

This photograph shows Gilbert and Sullivan's three leading ladies: the sopranos Sibyl Grey, playing Peep-Bo, and Leonora Braham, as Yum-Yum, and the mezzo-soprano Jessie Bond as Pitti-Sing. Gilbert claimed that the petiteness of the actresses 'suggested the advisability of grouping them as three Japanese school-girls'. Their costumes and movements had some claim to authenticity as Gilbert had consulted participants in the 'Japanese Village' exhibition of Japanese culture, which ran in Knightsbridge from 1885 to 1887 and attracted over 1 million visitors.
